The trailer teases a possible cure for the zombie outbreak that has devastated human populations for three decades. This film is the sequel to ’28 Years Later’, released earlier this year, which was the third movie in a franchise credited with reviving the zombie genre in the 21st century.
In the original ’28 Days Later’, a highly contagious ‘Rage Virus’ was accidentally released from a lab in Cambridge, England, turning infected individuals into violent, mindless ‘fast zombies’ that rapidly spread, causing societal collapse. The sequel, ’28 Weeks Later’, followed a new group of characters on the outskirts of London, where a single infection again led to widespread chaos.
’28 Years Later’ depicted Britain under a strict quarantine, with survivors on a small island connected to the mainland by a defended causeway. This film introduced evolved Alpha zombies, including one named Samson, and Dr. Ian Kelson, a survivor of the original outbreak who constructed a temple from human bones. The film concluded with a disillusioned 12-year-old Spike returning to the mainland, leaving his father Jamie and newborn sibling behind.
The new film picks up with Spike, Kelson, and Crystal playing significant roles. According to the official premise, Dr. Kelson enters a surprising new relationship with world-altering consequences, and Spike’s encounter with Jimmy Crystal becomes an inescapable nightmare. In ‘The Bone Temple’, the survivors’ inhumanity is presented as a greater threat than the infected. Samson the Alpha Zombie also returns. The cast includes Erin Kellyman, Emma Laird, and Maura Bird as members of Crystal’s cult.
Cillian Murphy will reprise his role as Jim from ’28 Days Later’ and ’28 Weeks Later’. The trailer features an exchange where Jimmy Crystal questions if Dr. Kelson is ‘Old Nick’ (Satan), likely referencing the morbid bone temple. The trailer also shows Spike joining Crystal’s group and Kelson recalling happier times before a truce with Samson. Kelson states, “I believe the infection can be treated,” and the trailer ends with him injecting Samson, described as “a leap into the unknown.”
’28 Years Later: Bone Temple’ is scheduled to be released in theaters on January 16, 2026.
