Lions coach Dan Campbell stated on Friday, November 21, that LaPorta will be out for an extended period, with a slim chance of returning before the season concludes.
LaPorta sustained the back injury during the Lions’ November 9 win over the Washington Commanders. He was subsequently placed on injured reserve and missed the November 16 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
In LaPorta’s absence, Brock Wright played a significant role as the team’s starting tight end, recording two catches for 8 yards. However, Wright will also miss the upcoming game against the Cowboys due to a neck injury. Shane Zylstra was also ruled out earlier in the week.
LaPorta has been a key offensive contributor for the Lions this season, ranking second on the team with 40 catches for 489 yards and three touchdowns. He has been a crucial target on third downs and in the red zone.
The Lions’ current tight end roster for the game against the Cowboys includes Ross Dwelley, Anthony Firkser (signed from the practice squad), Zach Horton (practice squad), and Giovanni Ricci (signed to the practice squad this week).
LaPorta, who was a second-round pick from Iowa in 2023, set a rookie record with 86 catches in his debut season. He is eligible for a contract extension this offseason and is considered a foundational player for the Lions.
Campbell expressed optimism about the surgery, stating, “The good news is the procedure went really well, long-term.”
