The event, which typically draws hundreds of thousands of people to the banks of the River Thames, was called off due to concerns over the spread of the Omicron variant of coronavirus.
“The festive season in London is usually a time of great joy and celebration, but the new wave of the Omicron virus means we must be cautious,” Mayor Sadiq Khan said in a statement.
“The safety of Londoners and visitors is our top priority, and we believe that cancelling the fireworks display is the responsible thing to do,” he added.
Khan said that the city would instead hold a “special broadcast” to mark the new year, featuring “some of the UK’s most exciting artists.”
