JO1 will be joined by a lineup of artists including Alex Warren, Jessie Murph, mgk, Nelly, Reneé Rapp, Rachel Chinouriri, Shinedown, and Zara Larsson. The performance marks a significant moment for the 11-member group, formed through the competition series Produce 101 Japan in 2020.
This year, JO1 concluded their first world tour, with stops in Taipei, Bangkok, Beijing, Seoul, Los Angeles, and New York. They have previously performed with Kesha and Eve, remixing their hits “Joyride” and “Let Me Blow Ya Mind.”
JO1 distinguishes their music not as J-pop, but as their own creation called “JO1-Pop,” encapsulated in their special edition EP, Handz in My Pocket, which showcases their versatility and distinct sound.
Members Sho, Junki, Ruki, and Ren shared their excitement about their upcoming Texas debut. Sho expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to perform at an event they were invited to, hoping to gain new fans. Junki described their performance as a challenge, aiming to showcase their best and define “JO1-Pop” with high energy.
When asked about their first time in Texas, Sho humorously mentioned wanting to try BBQ and steak, while Shoya expressed interest in experiencing “wild food.”
Reflecting on their international performances, Ruki noted the energy gained from performing globally, especially seeing fans in two U.S. locations for the first time. Ren and Sho observed that American fans are notably enthusiastic dancers and singers, often engaging with the music energetically.
Regarding their EP Hands in My Pocket, Sho explained their desire to express hidden potential and energy, aiming to empower fans through their music. The group decided on the EP’s sound through voting, opting for a change from their previous clean image to something “crazier and more energetic” for their 10th single.
The recording process for the EP was described as freeing, with songs featuring “crazy sounds and heavy beats.” They are particularly looking forward to performing their new song “Handz in My Pocket,” highlighting its “cool and dope” choreography.
Their experience performing with Eve and Kesha was described as amazing and a great learning opportunity. Sho praised Eve’s legendary status, next-level rap skills, and powerful yet delicate presence, which influenced their choreography.
Ren defined “JO1-Pop” as music that the members enjoy creating, emphasizing the importance of individuality. Junki added that the group actively discusses and decides on their musical direction, ensuring they pursue what is fun and works for them, setting them apart from other groups.
Looking ahead, JO1 is interested in incorporating Japanese instruments and sounds into their music, aiming to mix genres and voices to create a unique and energetic experience for their fans.
