Despite his self-critical nature, the British driver displays steely determination and a quiet confidence, even after being disqualified from second place in the previous race in Las Vegas. “People can believe whatever they want but deep down I know I’ve just been doing a very good job,” Norris stated. “I’ve been doing a better job than everyone else. I’m very happy with that. I just need to continue to do it.”
Norris has led the championship for much of the season, lost and regained the advantage. He currently leads his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by 24 points with two races remaining in Doha and Abu Dhabi. With 58 points still available, including a sprint race in Qatar, Norris is in a strong position to secure his first title and become the 11th British Formula One world champion.
To clinch the title this weekend, Norris needs to outscore both Piastri and Verstappen by two points, regardless of their finishing positions, or by one point if he wins the main race on Sunday. McLaren had already secured the constructors’ title in October.
Norris is aiming for a win rather than relying on points calculations. His conviction is bolstered by a strong run of form in the latter part of the season, with two wins and three podiums since the Dutch Grand Prix. Early season struggles with car grip have been overcome, allowing Norris to consistently exploit the car’s potential.
McLaren’s team principal, Andrea Stella, has praised Norris’s dedication and self-improvement throughout the season, highlighting it as a key factor in his championship contention. “I’m getting a lot out of the car and performing consistently,” Norris said. “I feel like my confidence is very high. Because I was struggling a lot with the car and several things at the beginning of the season, it’s put me into a much better position now, much later in the season. “I feel like this year I’ve still learned a lot in terms of how to deal with all of those things as a driver. I’m happy I had all the struggles and almost got them out of the way and been able to improve.”
While Norris is confident, Oscar Piastri remains a contender despite a recent dip in form. Piastri has a strong record at the Lusail circuit, including a sprint race victory last season, and secured pole position for the sprint race. He has vowed to fight until he is out of contention, and McLaren plans to let their drivers compete freely.
Max Verstappen represents a significant threat. After a mid-season slump, he has returned to form with an upgraded car. Despite trailing Norris, Verstappen has a history of comebacks and is known for his strategic mind games. “The pressure of getting it over the line is in the back of his mind,” Verstappen commented on Norris. “When you have won four world championships already, it is amazing and I shouldn’t be in the fight really but I am here.”
Verstappen suggested that he would have already secured the championship if he were driving for McLaren. His remarkable recovery to be in contention highlights the competitive nature of the remaining races. He acknowledges needing luck to close the gap but remains a formidable opponent who will seize any opportunity.
As Norris focuses on finishing the job with calm determination, Verstappen is poised to challenge, potentially taking the contest down to the wire.
