Another prominent origin story involves Saint Valentine, a priest who lived in Rome during the 3rd century. According to legend, Emperor Claudius II banned marriages for young men, believing single soldiers fought better. Valentine defied the emperor and secretly performed marriages for young lovers, earning him the name “Valentine.” He was eventually imprisoned and executed.
Over centuries, particularly from the Middle Ages onwards, the association of Valentine’s Day with romantic love grew stronger. The tradition of sending love letters and tokens of affection became widespread. In the 15th century, it is believed that the first known Valentine’s card was written by a prisoner in the Tower of London.
By the 18th and 19th centuries, the practice of creating and exchanging Valentine’s cards became a popular custom, especially in Britain and America. Mass production of cards further popularized the holiday, making it a significant cultural celebration of romantic love and friendship.
