The winner can choose to receive the jackpot in annual payments over 30 years, approximately $24 million per year before taxes, or opt for a lump sum cash payout.

The one-time cash payout is estimated to be $333 million before taxes. This lump sum is less than the advertised jackpot amount, which represents the total annuitized payout after 30 annual installments.

A Powerball ticket matching five out of six winning numbers, worth $979,462, was sold at a 7-Eleven in Mission Viejo, California, on Wednesday, according to the California Lottery website. However, the winner has not yet come forward to claim the prize.

The largest jackpot in lottery history was over $2 billion, won by Edwin Castro of California in November 2022. Castro chose the $998 million lump sum, receiving approximately $628 million after taxes.

If the current jackpot is taken as a lump sum, the winner would receive an estimated $210 million after federal taxes at a marginal rate as high as 37%, plus applicable state taxes.
