The scoring opportunity arose when linebacker Patrick Queen recovered a fumble by Bills running back James Cook at the Buffalo 39-yard line.
Following Warren’s touchdown, wide receiver DK Metcalf was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. However, officials did not enforce the penalty on the subsequent extra point attempt by Chris Boswell, nor did they push the attempt back 15 yards as required. Instead, the penalty was enforced on the ensuing kickoff.
CBS rules analyst and former NFL referee Gene Steratore stated that this was an error, explaining that penalties on the scoring team during a touchdown must be applied to the conversion attempt. This marks the first instance of a penalty related to the scoring play not being applied to the extra point.
The Bills’ first turnover occurred on their initial offensive possession when cornerback Brandin Echols intercepted a pass from Josh Allen at the Steelers’ 35-yard line. Despite this, the Steelers proceeded to punt three times in the game. The Bills have also punted twice between their turnovers. The team will need to find offensive momentum to secure a victory in Pittsburgh.
