Nix stated this week that “ultimately every good play starts at the beginning,” emphasizing the importance of being clean in and out of the huddle. Despite mid-season overhauls being difficult in the NFL, Nix is seeking incremental improvements as the Broncos approach a crucial stretch that could impact their AFC West division title hopes and the No. 1 overall seed in the conference. He believes that refining his operation and communication in the roughly 30 seconds between plays offers a path forward. While head coach Sean Payton’s pace in calling plays has been a frequent topic, Nix is also working on his own process. “As a quarterback, it’s ultimately our job to make sure the play is run well, run efficiently and gets done when it’s supposed to be done,” Nix said. “It starts in the huddle, starts having a great huddle, communication, guys knowing what they’re doing.” Although he rarely operated from the huddle in college at Oregon, Nix now has 28 NFL regular-season starts. He feels that if the correct information is provided in the huddle, players generally know their assignments. “Usually, a well-run huddle is going to be a well-run play,” he noted. “So I’ve got to get out there and it starts with the huddle. Good break, get lined up, get set, make sure you’ve got enough time on the play clock and then go from there.” Both Nix and Payton have acknowledged times when the offensive operation could be streamlined, with discussions about reducing information volume for greater efficiency between snaps. Veteran tight end Evan Engram commented on Nix’s dedication to improvement, stating, “He’s always looking for ways that he can improve. Once he sees an area he can get better at, he’s going to fix it right away.” Nix dedicated time during the Broncos’ mini bye week to work on these aspects and felt it showed dividends in the game against the Chiefs. The Broncos are currently on an eight-game winning streak and lead their division, also being in contention for the AFC’s top seed. While major offensive overhauls are not feasible mid-season, the team aims for improvement. They are currently tied for 14th in scoring and 17th in yards per play. Nix believes that execution, which begins in the huddle with clear communication and alignment, is paramount for scoring points. “We’re all talented enough to go out there and execute the play when we know what we’re doing — when we’re all on the same page,” he concluded.
