The Lakers sitting James on Sunday could be part of his recovery process. It is also possible that the Lakers are giving James a day of rest to ensure he is fresh for Monday’s game against the Phoenix Suns. This latter possibility makes sense, as the Lakers may not require James to defeat the 3-17 Pelicans. James has seen a slight decline in his statistics during his first four games of the regular season. The 23-year veteran is averaging a career-low 16.5 points in four games. However, with Luka Dončić playing at a high level and Austin Reaves making significant progress, the Lakers have not needed James to carry the offensive load. His field-goal attempts are down to a career-low 6.5 so far, suggesting he may still have significant energy reserves but has not felt the need to dominate games yet.
Furthermore, four games represent an extremely small sample size, and James did score 25 points in one of those games, indicating no immediate cause for concern. With Dončić, Reaves, and now James, the Lakers have a 14-4 record, placing them second in the Western Conference. If the team can maintain this performance level, James might have another championship run in him before retiring, although he has made no announcements regarding retirement. For the current season, his focus remains on leading the Lakers to another title.
